Calgary Flames Trade Blake Coleman Amid Limited Interest

The Calgary Flames entered the offseason expecting veteran forward Blake Coleman to generate significant interest around the NHL, but the trade market has cooled considerably.

What happened to the trade market?

The market for Coleman is “quiet for the moment” according to TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun, with Coleman’s limited 10-team approved trade list and salary cap constraints facing many contenders being major obstacles.

The Calgary Flames are currently standing 14th in the Western Conference with a 34-39 record, on a W1 streak, as of June 28, 2026.

Why is the trade list a roadblock?

LeBrun reported that the 10 teams on Coleman’s approved trade list either lack the cap flexibility needed to absorb the final season of his $4.9 million cap hit or are currently prioritizing other trade targets.

This immediately shrinks an already limited market, making it difficult for the Flames to find a suitable trade partner.

What does Coleman bring to the table?

Despite turning 34, Coleman remains one of the NHL’s more dependable two-way forwards, producing 20 goals and 35 points in 69 games last season, while continuing to play tough defensive minutes and provide veteran leadership.

What's next for the Calgary Flames?

The Flames may need to consider expanding Coleman’s trade list to open up more possibilities, as they continue to rebuild around a younger core, with the recent acquisition of Simon Nemec and Maxim Tsyplakov from New Jersey signaling their commitment to this approach.

The Flames would undoubtedly prefer to turn Coleman into future assets while creating opportunities for younger forwards, rather than risk losing him for nothing next summer.

And with many playoff-calibre teams operating tight against the salary cap, finding a fit for Coleman becomes extremely difficult when only 10 destinations are available.

But Coleman still holds significant value, with two Stanley Cup championships and a proven track record as a reliable complementary forward, making him an attractive asset for contenders.

So the Flames will need to be patient and strategic in their approach to trading Coleman, as they look to accelerate their rebuild and return to competitiveness in the Western Conference.
