The Calgary Flames have acquired defenceman Jacob Middleton in a trade with the Minnesota Wild.
The team is currently 14th in the Western Conference with a 34-39 record, on a W1 streak.
The Flames received Middleton and three draft picks in the trade, including a 2027 third-round pick, a 2028 fourth-round pick, and a 2029 second-round pick.
The Wild received forward Blake Coleman and defenceman Olli Määttä in return, with the Flames retaining 50 percent of Coleman’s salary.
Middleton is a 30-year-old left-shot defenceman who brings size and reliability to the Flames' roster.
He appeared in 75 regular-season games with the Wild last season, contributing 16 points on two goals and 14 assists.
The addition of Middleton is part of the Flames' effort to reshape their roster balance and add more grit and structure to the lineup.
As noted by Eric Francis of Sportsnet, the move is viewed internally as a way to reduce disruption and stabilize the defensive group.
The Flames are looking to Middleton to bring experience and toughness to a younger blue line.
Middleton has carved out a steady NHL career over nine seasons, establishing himself as a physical and dependable presence on the back end.
He is currently in the second year of a four-year contract carrying a $4.35 million cap hit.
The Wainwright, Alberta native will look to make an immediate impact with the Flames.
And with the trade, the Flames are hoping to turn their season around and make a push for the playoffs.
But for now, they remain focused on stabilizing their defensive group and finding consistency.
So the addition of Middleton is a step in the right direction for the Flames.
